Welcome to Lagos, Nigeria

Have you ever been to the most populous black city? The house of wisdom. It is often said that if you get to Lagos and don’t become wise, you may never become wise in your life. The city of aquatic splendor; which is located near the Atlantic Ocean. It is the smallest of the thirty-six states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but the most populous state in all of Africa with some seventeen million inhabitants. If you can drive successfully in Lagos, I bet you can drive anywhere in the world.

Lagos is one of Nigeria’s southwestern states and is predominantly occupied by the Yoruba, one of Nigeria’s three main tribes, who make up about 65 percent of the state’s population. While the remaining percentage of the population is divided between the Igbos, Hausas and many minor ethnic groups scattered among various corners of the state.

Since Nigeria practices the federal system of government and practices the democratic system of government, Lagos is mainly governed by a state government headed by a governor elected by democratic processes. In addition, there are various monarchical rulers scattered throughout the state, they have been the traditional system of town government before the advent of the new system, and are still highly regarded by the state government.

Being the former capital territory of the nation, Lagos remains the economic nerve of Nigeria. Many corporations in the nation still maintain their strong presence in the state despite the capital city’s move to Abuja. The original indigenous people are engaged in many local activities such as fishing, agriculture and trade.

Living in Lagos seems to be on the high side today compared to what it used to be many years ago. Average daily expenses for people with median incomes are $25, while some people still live on less than $1 a day. Things are really looking up since the advent of civilian rule about ten years ago.
