newborn clothing sizes

For those of us who design our own baby stuff, and all the rest of us who are just stumped by all the hassle involved with different baby size charts and measurements, here is a size chart. Since I have personal experience with the accuracy of available charts that can be found on the Internet, I am providing this information here, rather than linking to an online chart.

* Measurements in parentheses are in cm.

Baby shoe sizes:

Please note that these measurements are for the finished product and length only.

Newborn: 3.5″ (8.8cm)
3 – 6 months: 3.75″ (9.5cm)
6 – 9 months: 4.25″ (10.7cm)
9 – 12 months: 4.5″ (11.43 cm)

The sleeves are so variable that I don’t feel comfortable giving measurements for them! You’re better off measuring something in ready-to-wear that has the sleeves you like. Trust me, people don’t give you weird looks when you do this at Wal-Mart.

Baby blanket:

Of course, you can make baby blankets any size you like. Sizing them to fit a crib might be a really good idea, but I have no idea what size a crib is! When I make baby blankets, I make them the same size as a receiving blanket. This is the size I have found most useful. Finally, when shopping for new baby clothes, remember: When in doubt, shop based on weight and height rather than age! It is always safe to choose a larger size.
