How many gallons of water are in your pond?

There are two very important steps you must complete before purchasing your pond pump. You need to determine the number of gallons of water in the pond and the pond head pressure. There are four shapes for a pond. They are circular, square / rectangular, oval and irregular in shape. Each has its own unique calculation to determine the number of gallons in your pond.

Calculate the amount of water in your pond

• The amount of water in a square or rectangular pond is determined by measuring the length, width, and depth of your pond in feet (not yards or inches). First, multiply the length by the width. Now multiply that by the depth of your pond. To convert the number from feet to gallons, multiply the total feet by 7.5.

o EXAMPLE: The pond is 12 ‘long, 6’ wide, and 4 ‘deep. 12 ‘long x 6’ wide = 72 ‘and 72’ x 4 ‘deep = 288’. The total area of the pond is 288 ‘. 288’x7.5 = 2,160 gallons of water

• To determine the amount of water in a circular pond, you will measure the diameter of the pond at the widest part. Then measure the depth. Both should be measured in feet (not yards or inches). Multiply the diameter by 2 and then multiply this total by the depth. To convert the number of feet to gallons, multiply the total feet by 5.9.

o EXAMPLE: The pond is 4 ‘wide and 3’ deep. 4 ‘diameter x 2 = 8’ and 8 ‘x 3’ = 24 ‘. The total area of the pond is 24 ‘. 24’x5.9 = 1,416 gallons of water

• An oval pond is calculated by measuring the length at its longest part and the width at its longest part. Also measure the depth. To determine the total feet you must multiply the length by the width. Use this total and multiply it by the depth. All measurements must be in feet (not yards or inches). To convert the total from feet to gallons, multiply by 6.7.

o EXAMPLE: The pond is 8 ‘long and 4’ wide. Depth is 5 ‘. 8 ‘long x 4’ wide = 32 ‘. 32 ‘x 5’ deep = 160 ‘. 160 ‘x 6.7 = 1,072 gallons of water

• If your pond has an irregular shape, you will need to divide the pond into sections. Once this is done, measure the length, width, and depth of each section. Always use feet and not inches or yards. Multiply the length of each section by the width and multiply the total by the depth. Continue doing this for each section. Add up the total feet of each section. Use the total of all the sections and multiply by 7.5. This will give you the total gallons.

o EXAMPLE: Section 1 is 7 ‘long, 3’ wide, and 5 ‘deep. 7 ‘long x 3’ wide = 21 ‘. 21 ‘x 5’ deep = 105 ‘. The total area of section one is 105 ‘. Section 2 is 4 ‘long, 6’ wide, and 5 ‘deep. 4 ‘wide x 6’ wide = 24 ‘. 24 ‘x 5’ deep = 120 ‘. The total area of section two is 120 ‘. 105 ‘+ 120’ = 225 ‘. 225 ‘x 7.5 = 1,688 gallons of water.
