Financial stress is one of the leading causes of divorce

Financial stress and money problems are one of the leading causes of divorce across the country. It’s something that is discussed at some point by almost every couple, and especially at certain times of the year. That includes holidays and, of course, tax season. That’s why it’s important to take stock of how money problems and financial stress can lead to a divorce, while also looking at how else these issues can influence a marriage or the resulting separation and divorce.

According to a recent study by the Institute of Divorce Financial Analysts, money problems were cited as the third most common cause of divorce, occurring in 22% of cases as the leading cause of a divorce. While that’s an example of how often money leads to divorce, even that number can be low.

The most common cause of divorce, basic incompatibility, reached 43%. That incompatibility often stems from inherent differences in how money and finances should be handled. Common points of contention and incompatibility include such issues as how much to save versus how much to spend, planning long-term financial goals, savings goals and strategies, getting out of or managing debt and budgets, etc.

It is clear that money and finances play a very important role in the life of each person and in the life that a couple builds together. Also, whether or not finances played a role in the divorce, they will be one of the most important issues at stake during the divorce. The parties may face alimony and child support obligations, as well as the division of financial assets, including real estate, bank accounts, stocks and investments, and retirement assets.

It is also another reason why some people strongly believe that they should obtain a prenuptial agreement before marriage. That is not a sign that a person believes that a marriage is going to fail, but rather, an acknowledgment that these issues often become difficult to resolve when the marriage breaks down.

For anyone experiencing both financial stress and related marital problems, it is important to remember that you are not alone. It is a common problem and it is equally important to remember to work with an experienced professional who can offer help.

When these issues lead you down the road to separation and divorce, it is time to consult with an experienced legal professional, such as a divorce attorney, to determine the best course of action in your particular circumstance. As with all other matters, it is always important to protect your own personal interests and avoid unnecessary entanglement.
