Importance of road safety education

Public health problems are taken seriously for effective problem solving. Health problems include various entities, but unfortunately, things are not included in a serious framework in our country, “Pakistan”. Health and education are the two important and focused parameters that should be a priority for any developing country because they are associated with rapid change in the economy of the respective country. Due to the increase in vehicle ownership, the graphical trend of road accidents in Pakistan is abruptly altered, including minor, serious and fatal road accidents of all types of road users. The problem is again related to the issue of health, road traffic is not a problem that must be addressed through enforcement actions, it is a common health problem that affects the general public. According to the statistical analysis of the Social Research and Development Organization (non-governmental organization and research center working on culture and promotion of effective road safety education for all Sindh), a high severity rate is recorded for Karachi, a metropolitan city of Pakistan. Areas include Korangi Highway, Korangi Industrial Zone, National (Urban) Highway, MA Jinnah Highway, and Shahrah-e-Faisal.

There is an immense need to facilitate users in terms of effective road safety education. Education is the least important parameter among the three E’s of transportation, but it could play the leading role when it is established early on. In this sense, planning and management from the perspective of stakeholders is mandatory. Road users are not aware of civic sense, traffic rules and regulations and, unfortunately, they are the holders of direct registered vehicle licenses. This corresponds to the negligent driving of road users and ultimately leads to a traffic accident. It is not the blame game to target users, but you need the guidance of the existing system. The system must be designed in such a way that, without basic knowledge of road safety, a person cannot support their personal vehicle. Road safety education and important topics should be introduced in primary school; secondary and higher level in order to better immacular the issue of awareness. The opening of road safety seminars, forums and conferences, not only for the relevant stakeholders, but also for the common man, is another important step towards improvement. It should be part of the documented legislation that road users are capable enough to attend such seminars in the past at the time the license is issued.

Bodies of government officials, the private sector, universities, schools, colleges, engineers and professionals should come together and work on the road safety education curriculum and syllabus at different levels. For any productive outcome, the basics must be stronger and involving road safety in the curriculum is the first step. After completion of this step, additional steps, including awareness programs, engineering and compliance issues, will be partially resolved. Similarly, training sessions should be organized and designed effectively for each class of road user, such as drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers. Each class has its own responsibilities and rights and they are related to the technical problem of traffic accidents.

Road safety is a problem that cannot be solved overnight or even eliminated, but it can be minimized in a number of ways discussed above. Apart from that, it is also the responsibility of each individual to develop civic sense, which is the main theme. Everyone is interested in their own participation in the flow of traffic. The traffic environment depends on the road agents, who are basically road users, and their skills can only be improved through proper road safety education.
