Mirror’s Edge – PlayStation 3 Demo Review

I first got the news from EBGames that the Mirror’s Edge demo will be available on November 6th, I assume it was a week early and will be released today. It’s always a good thing! Unlike Little Big Planet, I’m still waiting for it to be sent to me from Futureshop, it said “Sent”, but I haven’t seen it in my mailbox yet.

Anyway in the demo.

OMG that was literally what I said to myself when playing this game, I have never had this much excitement in a long time! Even though the demo lasted 20-25 minutes max (unless you keep dying). The game is similar to The Bourne Conspiracy where you have to act quickly otherwise you will be captured / killed. Compared to Bourne, I think Mirror’s Edge is the best.

Faith, your character tells you the story in comic style while loading, what’s more, it’s always better to be looking at something in motion rather than boring old “loading” text. The first part of the demo begins with some tutorials on how to move, jump, slide under objects, and climb. Apart from the basics, you will learn to disarm from behind or in front, shoot or throw the weapon. Thats not all! You will also learn how to do crazy stunts, like running horizontally on a wall, then turning and jumping to the opposite side (sorry, I did my best to describe it). It’s basically 3 button presses, but you really need to time your presses. So you can chain your movements and do something crazy. One thing I love about the controls is that most of the actions are done using just the L1.

The second part is the real deal where you have to jump / move / climb to deliver a package to the other Celeste runner. In between, you have to run from enemies and / or fight your way through the fight. Let me tell you, the second part was a THRILL to play!

The graphics are AMAZING and can run in Full HD 1080p. I especially like the way the lighting is done. The whole city looks very realistic. I couldn’t stop taking pictures while gaming and the graphics are so good. Definitely treats for the eye.

I can’t really comment much on the music, there is only one track and a good one, of course. It feels like the opening music of Metal Gear Solid.

If you haven’t downloaded the demo, please do so! You do not know what you’re missing!

I really appreciate game companies posting game demos because they allow us gamers to try games before they buy, rather than doing all the guesswork and then risking buying something we don’t enjoy playing. Reading reviews and watching trailers for Gamespot and Gametrailers helps a bit, but you can never be sure until you’ve played the games YOURSELF.
