How Does mum Google Paper Affect Small Online Businesses?

Google Paper Affect Small

It seems that the UK’s most famous blogger, Mum Google has finally turned the tables on the search engine giant and is currently enjoying some amazing benefits. It looks as though she has been granted permission to manipulate the search results and could soon change the way we do business online forever. Google recently became the target of a major PR campaign, where she was accused of ‘shill’ tactics by left-leaning bloggers for pushing certain sites higher up the Google rankings. This has raised the spectre of Google using its search engine to promote specific political, business, and other interest groups, something the company strenuously denied.

Now it seems that Mum Google has received similar treatment, but in a very different way. She has been granted permission to manipulate the search results and appears to have done exactly that. The Financial Times reports that she will be using Google AdWords, the popular PPC advertising service, to target certain search terms and ads. This means that she will be able to boost the visibility of certain sites higher up the Google results, helping them to gain top page ranking positions quicker and in some cases even beating the results of more established competitors.

What does this mean for other small websites, and the owners of the blog and site associated sites? To understand this, you have to look beyond the surface and look at the politics of Google. The main purpose of the search giant is to provide its users with the most relevant search results, those that are likely to produce the best conversion rates. The algorithm is designed to ensure that the most relevant sites get more traffic, which in turn helps boost the revenue earned. Therefore, if Mum Google is making all of the difference, it goes without saying that smaller businesses, bloggers, and site owners would benefit from a more efficient ad-blocking system.

However, such blocking becomes possible when Google is not directly advertising a site. In other words, when Mum Google is directing users to click on political advertisements, it is not doing so because it wants to promote a political party, or an environmental cause. Instead, it is acting under the guise of providing a better user experience through better search results. So where does this political interference come into play?

It is all about page one results, because these are the search results that are shown first in a Google search. If these results are dominated by political affiliation, then the result is likely to show a lot of political advertisements. This will ultimately lead users to click on these links and consequently increase the revenue of the advertiser. Ultimately, the more people who click on these links, the more money the advertiser stands to make.

Under normal circumstances, Google does not favor any particular website or site. Therefore, the political advertisements that appear in the search results are simply part of the process of delivering better search results to users. When a website or page is targeted to a particular political affiliation, the algorithm will tend to favour that website more. With this rise in political sites appearing regularly in the search results, it is little wonder that Google has now introduced a new feature that may greatly affect small websites, and the amount they earn.
