Cooking with MS – Tips to improve symptoms through healthy meal preparation and better nutrition

The types of foods greatly affect the severity and frequency of MS symptoms. It is ideal to be able to eat as healthily as possible, while taking in as many beneficial vitamins and minerals as possible to slow the progression of this condition. It can be done, and it can still be delicious!

When it comes to eating healthy, whether it’s to improve the condition of the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, or simply to live better, it can be done without excessive restriction. Healthy eating should not consist of restrictions. It should be about finding healthy alternatives to the dishes we like the most. Those who are diagnosed with any health condition, whether it be MS, high blood pressure, or irritable bowel syndrome, may find new and improved meal plans somewhat daunting. But changing the way you cook is easy, and it starts with the way you shop.

Those who have multiple sclerosis don’t necessarily have to limit themselves to expensive health food stores, although they are a great place to look if the opportunity is available. However, modern supermarkets really do sell healthy, organic food, if you know where to look. Seemingly strange new ingredients like sunflower oil and flaxseed will become familiar members of your shopping cart. It may take a bit of effort to find all these new ingredients at first, but pretty soon, you’ll always know where to find them.

There are endless tips and tricks that make eating with MS possible, if not a great dining experience. Brownies can be made with natural cocoa, with applesauce instead of vegetable oil. Ground flaxseeds can be added to just about anything for that extra dietary fiber, and are barely noticeable in many dishes. Lean cuts of meat can be seasoned with herbs and spices to make them taste better than fatty steaks. When in doubt, go natural. The fewer ingredients you use, the better.

If you don’t have time to prepare meals, consider taking time on lazy weekend afternoons to prep food and freeze it so it can be thawed or popped in the oven for a quick meal. When you have the basic ingredients on hand, you’ll be able to whip up quick meals from easy recipes without wasting much of your day. There’s nothing wrong with using some shortcuts, because adjusting to life with fatigue and other symptoms requires you to adjust. Make it easy for you to eat healthy.
